I figured out how to step through code in Inkscape using Visual Studio and I made a wiki for it too: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Using_Visual_Studio
It requires a plugin called VisualGDB which unfortunately isn't free, but definitely affordable. Finally I can use my favorite tool :-)
