And I am certain that you never run a survey on that :) As a matter of
fact both embedding and linking are equally valid in desktop
publishing world.

Of course it all depends on your audience. Linking might be common practice in desktop publishing, but it don't think the average office worker is used to that concept. IMHO embedding should be the default, such that our office worker can easily email his document to a co-worker without bothering about links, whereas our skilled graphical designers can decide to link their high resolutions bitmaps into the SVG for maximum flexibility if they need or want to. They will find their way with Inkscape anyway.
