This is because Sodipodi was changed to use the same algorithm for pencil as for calligraphic. It was one of the last changes before the project died. If anyone thinks it's a good idea you can port over that code to Inkscape.
Oh for some spare time (and brains) :)
BTW - I don't mean to dis Inkscape in any way by mentioning Sodipodi - Ink is just light years better in every way.
