At the moment, gcc-4 requires libsigc++-2.0.12 no matter what. Jon Cruz writes that probably gcc-4.1 on Fink would work with 2.0.11, but this is not sure, and hey, why not upgrading your libsigc++. That's the normal way of resolving things.
FWIW, I did upgrade my sigc++. My point was that once I had read the first post in this thread, I knew that I could not assume that everybody else would be happy to, or know how to.
The interest now is that it looks that following Jon's work, we can continue, in many cases, to use the fink sigc++
