I am very strongly in favor of having as less branches as possible, as this greatly simplifies things in my head. Moreover, investigating bugs can be swift without lots of clean builds (I am assuming each branch will need a clean build; on my windows machine at least). For me it is best to keep it simple stupid :) I like the tortoise tool sooo much, but I guess any GUI tool will do (I have used WinSVN or some tool with a similar name but I did not understand a single thing of it... maybe now I would though)
