On thing that would help me as a user would be a "Special Character" dialogue which allows one to view and select the characters from fonts that don't easily map to the keyboard. With large fonts this would be very helpful; even with small "extras" fonts it would be a fair time-saver.
I wish I had the time to do it myself, but if people are taking suggestions, then that's mine.

Fixing the HORRIBLE thing we call a text tool. ;) I'm
pretty sure that
would rank very high if someone planned to re-implement the
text tool
controls bar and to also add a number of other controls (kerning, rotation, etc) that have been sadly missing for a long time
from the UI.
As great as animation support would be or a working
whiteboard (which
would be fantastic), fixing one of the biggest usability issues we have would be better (imho). Also, if GSoC is going to be downsized this year as it sounded like, it would probably be
advisable to choose
a must have feature over a really cool one.

I might want to work on the text tool... :-) I hate it with a passion.
