I don't think it is in this case. The outline on-canvas clearly fulfills the display portion of expected svg output (ignore text for a second) while a stroke provides armature to edit.
What fun it would be to be able to add a defs path to any elements and control it like a puppet ;-) For this though, it's not outrageous to expect edit and view data to be saved.
