I have merged the first batch of work into trunk.

The changes for this feature are fairly localized and there is a
substantial improvement in perceived responsiveness, so it would be a
shame to hold it back until I'm finished with other unrelated things.
The next batch of changes is likely to be more invasive. (Hint: I want
to implement a Google Maps-like effect on zooming.)
