I think it would also be nice to have it working like untitled-1, untitled-2 as you fire up different instances of Inkscape, so if you have just saved untitled-1 you will be automatically suggested to save as untitled-2 within the next instance... Or is it possible? I don't know if different instances communicate in some way.
I also changed it so that the save directory defaults to your home directory instead of the pwd. I don't know if that is a good thing or not. It is probably more intuitive for new users - but it is not how other applications work.
I think you are right here. Some people fire up Inkscape from different places because they want it to be. But newbies feel lost as in the current file dialogue you can't just press a button and go home (before gtk 2.4 afaik).
