Thanks, brynn. I'm excited for this project as well!
You bring up a good point about google moving to deprecate SMIL. That must be frustrating for those who produce content using SMIL. I suppose if it's possible, I could add some sort of CSS fallback to the animation, to make it work for chrome (and IE?) users.

Also, I can say that what you're proposing sounds exciting, and I hope it can be
done.  Because at least one browser has proposed ending support for SMIL, it
would be awesome to (be able to) show its usefulness, to hopefully prevent being
dropped.
