Additionally... having a parallel directory tree/subtree in the HEAD is basically just a branched tree in disguise.
If we actually have a CVS branch, then there are some ways to manage things. Of course, I don't like those either, however there are ways to manage things. Judicious use of mergeto_ and mergefrom_ tags are among those. http://www.twobarleycorns.net/tkcvs/tkcvs-log.gif
Bottom line, though, is that it *is* a good thing to keep branching (of either kind) to a minimum. A short branch isn't *too* bad as long as it's properly managed and tagged. Short as in lifespan is the key here.
