As I explained in this thread, this is a problem with the node editor, not with freehand tool. You might want to file a bug for it, or try to fix it yourself (it's simple; when loading the path into SPNodepath, just consider the node smooth if its handles are collinear and there is no sodipodi:nodetypes).
hmm, but shouldn't there just be a nodetypes for a newly drawn path? Where is the sense in creating a new path withouth them?
