They set the new color and "nothing happens".
Since the canvas background color is originally white and the background is white, they may not necessarily make the connection that alpha also needs to be adjusted.
Rendering a checkerboard on the canvas for transparent backgrounds would be another way to fix that, but I don't think people would like that very much.
