Sebastian Götte worked on refactoring the connector code to allow alternative routing back-ends for his 2013 GSoC project.[1] His interest mainly lies in using Inkscape for CAD purposes. The code has not yet been merged with trunk.
Some members of the SVG working group are very interested in connectors. I put together a proposal that was well received by the group.[2] Any connector work should keep this in mind.
