It also risks creating a lot of extra work adding extra markup to the other status bar messages. The statusbar can and will be disabled so it should not be used for any really important information.
Right, the statusbar itself is supplemental, as is formatting.
But although I was skeptical at first, I think it does provide an incremental benefit (provided it's not overused).
