But I was just about to start adding fun new stuff.
That's what branches are for. ;-)
Why can't we give Jon some time to work on his stuff? He wasn't very active after 0.44, but did a lot of good work before that, so I'd vote for postponing the next release (which is always a stress for developers :) if Jon has short-term development plans.
I *think* I'd be on track to get stuff to a releasable state in about a month.
However, for the "wide toolbars" problem, Aaron and I have a bit of a handle on it, and can work on much of it stand-alone. So this could be done wile 0.45 were going through release and then go into the SVN right after 0.45 is out the door.
On the other hand, if this UI fix would be *desired* for 0.45, then I'm very confident about being able to get in in within a reasonable timeframe. Also I can definitely see the benefit of the UI change.
So I think this is an executive decision: release a few weeks eariler, but with the existing "fat" UI; or add a few weeks to the schedule and get a UI that can be drug narrower.
(I think the time delta would be a few weeks instead of a whole month since the release prep and bug hunt will overlap much of that).
