Hello William,
could you let me know which installer did you use? Was it the .msi or the .exe version of the installer. I see from your post you are using the 64 bit version and you are using Win7-64bit.

Hi Eduard,
Did as you asked. I did indeed have a x32 Inkscape before. After applying the work around from post #1, Inkscape is now poperly associated with the SVG file type. The same with SVGZ. Below are the contents of the REG keys, from before, and after the work around was applied. Thanks for your help.

Hi William,
could you check if you're experiencing the issue described in https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1417146 ?
(It occurs if you had a 32-bit version of Inkscape installed before and switched to a 64-bit version now).
See my comment #1 in the linked bug for a possible workaround. If you try it it'd be great if you could export the registry key first so we can see if/what changes and maybe are able to pin down the cause of the issue as a first step towards implementing a fix.

Hi,
After upgrading to version *0.92.1 r15371* *x64*, Inkscape no longer associates to the SVG file type. I tried completely uninstalling/reinstalling. Have also made sure there are no other versions still present on my PC. Checked for any version x64, x32 or portable. My PC runs on Windows 7 x64 U.E. I also had not recently updated or installed any other software.
An other strange thing was that suddenly GIMP was being associated with the SVG file type, without me adjusting any settings.
I would right click a SVG file to try associate Inkscape via the routine *Open With... Choose Default Program*. Inkscape was no longer in the presented list. Also navigating to the *inkscape.exe* file and selecting it, was no use. Inkscape would still not associate with SVG. Also trying through the Configuration Panel didn't work.
Also, trying again after rebooting the computer, didn't work.
Typical thing is that SVGZ file are still associated with Inkscape like they where before. Notably, I am not having issues starting up Inkscape directly from the executable. And I can still use it to edit SVG files. It's just an annoyance to have to use a work about. Also I feel not qualified to tell whether it's a bug or not.
I have posted on the Inkscape forum, where they recommended that I contact the developers through the mailing list. Below a link to my first relevant post on that forum.

Hopefully you can help me out.
