Is this a normal thing to do? To me this sounds like intentionally trying to break it.

Seeing error messages (bad fonts) appear on the console window, just Alt+Tab'ing to the console window to see messages, not to break system ;-)

This doesn't really matter. Forcing a user to learn and remember some actions which must be avoided lest it breaks is unacceptable, even if these actions are rare and seemingly pointless. Enough to run into this once to be annoyed forever and lose trust in the program, especially when it's not easy to understand what exactly you did "wrong" that led to this.
