For me it's near top priority because I'm the one who introduced those changes, but I haven't had time to do anything Inkscape-related recently. I also don't have a Mac or know anyone who has one though and this problem isn't as severe on other systems.
For now you can see whether removing the hicolor directory from Inkscape's icons directory fixes things.
Andre, I'm actively working on that at the moment.
One thing to do is remove the hicolor directory. However there was some code done to render and cache images that got removed and needs to be restored. Once I get that fixed in a clean way, all should be good again.
