At the SVG Working Group meeting yesterday there was a discussion on adding a new path type to SVG that would allow a path to be drawn that passes automatically through a list of points. You can read a blog post from Doug Schepers about the idea at:
We discussed the possibility of using Spiro paths rather than the initially proposed Catmull-Rom curves as Inksscape and FontForge already support Spiro curves. (Spiro curves may, however, be overkill and there are patent issues.)
