Agreed that they do different things, but there's no comparison for how often I apply filters to objects rather than layers (and currently get by with selecting the layer in the XML editor to achieve it). So it's still just wasted real estate for me because it would be used so infrequently and it's why I suggested that the meta-widget be collapsible if possible.
For note, I only have single head displays and while they can go 1600x1200 it's not practical because of the actual size of the display and the distance I sit from them. So, I need all the screen area I can get. ;)
