No, we've supported that since we were Sodipodi -- hit 'a' for append mode while in any of the drawing tools.
However, bulia has just reworked the feature so that appending is the default if you have an existing shape selected, so hopefully people won't keep missing the feature anymore...

Yeah, I wasn't aware of it. I assumed he would have said something about this when the issue first came up. It is exactly this functionality that was the genesis of my "awkward" and "cumbersome" workarounds I was detailing in the Inkscape for AI users guide. Since he was suggesting duplicating the end node, or something, I figured there really wasn't a "add mode". Now I know, plus it'll be easier to use with Bulia's enhancements. (Huzaa! Hurray!) So, all's well that ends well.
