I noticed that it seems to take a variable time to bring up the Tutorial file and the Keys and Mouse file. Chasing it a bit further I got into "low on virtual memory" messages from windows and then crashes.
Looks like we need boehm, and we need it NOW.
I guess Linux does its memory cleanup properly, so there's no garbage left when the program exits. I work in Inkscape for hours when drawing, and I run it literally hundreds of times when doing development, with no slowdown. I guess Windows is another matter entirely...
After a couple of calls of the Tutorial file, but before crash, I tried to use the Freehand tool and it gave very erratic performance indeed. Sometimes no curves, sometimes small straight sections instead of curves etc. Not a good scene.
This bug was fixed yesterday. If it didn't make it into yesterday's build, try today's.
