The Cairo branch will make this problem slightly less severe. In some workloads it is many times faster. I also want to make an OpenCL backend for Cairo, which will allow it to use modern GPUs, but this is a more long term goal. Right now we are waiting until Cairo fixes this bug, which is the last issue precluding a merge: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=32215
