The underlying cause is that SPText is not an SPShape. I wonder who made this design choice?
I thought the pattern spam for text is related to the way I have implemented multi-shape editing (the shape editors are recreated every time the selection changes), but it looks like it's not. Either way, I changed this so that the shape editor for a given shape is only created / destroyed when necessary, and enabled editing of patterns for text (r9868).
Now looking at 669162.
