Is the canvas rotate idea currently being implemented? I found the thread from April which had a lot of great ideas but I didn't know if anyone was working on it of if it's on the list of things to do.

No, mostly it just requires architecture work, but as far as I know nobody's actively working on it at this time.

"Architecture work" is not as scary as it sounds :) If someone wants to work on this I will be happy to be a mentor/guide.
