I forgot to say that I also do not like the widescreen behavior, and I think Inkscape should always start the first time with 'Default' (regardless of monitor size).

When Inkscape detects that you have a widescreen display, it puts the bars on the rhs. You can put them back where they 'belong' from the menu: View >> Default (at the bottom)
