Oh, I used little shell scripts to automate the process when I was doing it. But there didn't seem to be any automated way to fix the problems when they came up. Wouldn't software development be much easier if there were! :-) There are some resources on the wiki if you are interested in learning how to build autopackages. And the Autopackage developers in #autopackage on freenode have always been very helpful too.
