A commonly used benefit would be viewing the document at two zoom levels at the same time. A user can adjust a drawing at a high zoom level and see how it affects the overall look of the image without repeatedly having to change zoom level (very frustrating). A long time ago Jon did a mockup of combining multiple views in a single window:
This mockup is OK. Creating two or more SPCanvas / NRArenas per document is good. What I'm against is creating two SPDesktops that edit the same SPDocument. It's just wrong and unexpected for users, and it makes correctly implementing shape editing tools extremely tedious.
