Hey, I already added this a few days ago. Did you read my announcement here? Or is your system an addition to mine? Or are you developing a different system in your gtkmm branch? If so, why duplicate the functionality?
Once again: Go to document prefs and set "document units". This sets units for ruler, statusbar, and all unit selectors. This is in CVS.
