The logic is something like this: if what fails for you is some pretty simple and straightforward operation, such as pasting a pattern fill, chances are your document is unusual because otherwise we would have caught this before <...> This means you need to supply your document so we could reproduce it. And if the failure you observe is rare or involves some unusual circumstances, of course you also need to give us the document where this happens. So, in any case, submitting the sample document is a very good idea :)
