I am 99,9% sure it is impossible in Word, because opening the same document for the second time simply focuses the existing window created for that document.
100% possible in Word 2007. View Ribbon -> Windows -> New Window "Open a new window containing a view of the current document." I haven't been able to find reference to this functionality in any Microsoft provided online documentation yet, but here is a google books result:
