I think being able to create multiple desktops for the same document is a huge misfeature. It introduces considerable additional complexity for little benefit.
Just as "Other software does this" isn't the best argument in favor of a feature, neither is "Other software doesn't do this" always the best argument against a feature. For some reason comparative arguments tend to detract from the main point: the affect on the user. Whether or not other software allows it, providing multiple views of a document can make a user more efficient.
Also, other software does do this. For example in gvim you can split your window vertically and horizontally, or add a new tab and have 2 copies of the same file with different views, and any changes made in one window are seen in the other.
