Maybe it is a bit too late now, but I also disagree that it is purely geometric. For example, in pencil and ink drawings, dots are often used for shading, as a cleaner alternative to hatching. I used the pencil tool to make these drawings and being able to hold CTRL and tap with a pen on a tablet to shade and give volume to the line-drawing was very useful.
