I just thought that it might be very useful for web design - for example, I have many icons/buttons/images that have not so many colours, and I use Inkscape to export them to PNG, and no other tool is used after that, I use the Inkscape.s resulting PNG on my pages.
In terms of UI, an "indexed colours" checkmark and colour number chooser could be added in the export dialogue.
It's certainly been discussed (it might even be an RFE -- you should add it to the RFE list if it is not), we're just waiting for someone to implement it.
Any volunteers?
