if you want an alternative then using Ctrl+G Group Ctrl+Shift+G Ungroup would be more consistant with the Gnome HIG.
still many new users might think that Ctrl+U was for Ungroup
We have both Ctrl+U and Ctrl+Shift+G. And I don't see why a different meaning of Ctrl+U in text editing mode is a problem. Lots of other keys also have different meanings in this mode, such as arrow keys.
