I have a dual monitor setup on my desk. I prefer to maximize the main window on one monitor and have the tools also on the other.
I do not want to minimize the effective canvas size by other childs.

I'm fairly certain that abandoning separate windows would meet with a great deal of criticism. Recalling some of the SDI/MDI debates from early on the project I'm fairly certain there are strong feelings on this topic. ;-)
