I would really like to have a way to set my prefs so that the units of measurement always default to mm rather than points.
In fact I've just recently added a new unit management system. At application loadup it builds a UnitTable listing all of the various kinds of units available. Eventually, this will load from a table so you can define your own new units. (And eventually eventually, you'll be able to edit and save that table inside Inkscape).
I'll also add a 'preferred units' capability so the user can flag what default unit of measurement to display. That shouldn't be too hard...
