OK - He's on 10.5.7 and i386 (whew), and I'm going to walk him through Macports. I used Macports myself some years ago, so I think it will go pretty smoothly.

But a semi-related follow-up: where should user extensions go in OS X? Does a ~/.inkscape get created?
