I think it's fair to say most people do not rely solely on the palette for their selection of colours. Yes, because its not big enough and also because it doesn't allow you to find a colour with a little more red, or a little less green, etc.
For that, there's one more method I forgot: color modes of the Tweak tool can apply to parts of gradient and even single colors. And yet another method I just added: color gestures. Both are perfect for finely adjusting a color you approximately selected from the palette.
