I think it would be faster, and I would absolutely *love* to use cairo - and indeed that was my initial plan, but last I looked, I didn't see rsvg in the bundle, and I didn't want to add the extra as a dependancy. But I see that it is there now - I shall give it a try!

There should be no problem adding that sort of refinement. I could even append it as a button on right-hand end of the toolbar there.
