Mental might be able to think of some things. Myself, I tend to try and fix bugs in the tracker. That gets me exposed to a large cross-section of the code. I'm still a pretty green C++ programmer, but I've been using C for a long time.

Probably the best way to get involved is to jump on the Jabber channel. We meet on the "inkscape" channel on the "conference.gristle.org" server. If no one is there, just try to hang out and usually people will filter in and out. http://inkscape.org/discussion.php
