Add an attribute thats inkscape:stockid="A name" and inkscape should pick it up.

Is there a trick to adding new patterns to the patterns.svg file?
I created a new user pattern in an image using the objects to pattern option and saved the file. I then cut out the <pattern></pattern> in a text editor and added it into patterns.svg. It shows up in the pattern drop list, but does not actually work.
Here is the pattern I created:

Suggestions (or pointers) on what is wrong with this pattern? In the original file it works file as a pattern. One note is that I edited the width and height to allow the strokes to overlap without gaps, but again, it works well as a pattern in the svg document.
