Is it planned to release bzipped versions like with 0.43? They saved nearly 3 MB (but are less secure AFAIK).
Yeah, Ted always did a bzipped version. I haven't simply because make dist didn't create one. I can make one if you like. In the future I think we should add that to make dist and make distcheck if we want it.
Why is gzip more secure than bzip2?
I'm not sure if this applies to bzip Version 2 but bzip can detect and even 'repair' damaged parts of an archive because there was no overall checksum to adhere to. Checksums were applied on the level of data blocks which allowed exchange of parts by a MITM attack.
gzip OTOH does not tolerate exchange of archive parts.
