I have updated the icon proposal, now I have added color to the icon, please share your comments and thoughts.
While this is very nice work, on Mac OS X the standards for filetype icons are different. The standard, as I see it, is: - badge the blank "document" icon with the application icon, centered - write the extension underneath with Lucida Sans Bold font For examples see Preview, Pages, Keynote or Quicktime documents icons.
This standard, though it uses text in the icon, which is not recommended, is really well established on OS X and has several advantages: - the user can expect which application will open from the look of the icon - the file type is directly apparent on the icon, which makes sense on OS X because you can hide file extensions (though this habit seems to disappear) - and from a developer point of view, the design work is reduced to the application icon
If an icon change is in order, I would like the mac OS X icons to be changed to use this standard. I have produced some there: http://jo.irisson.free.fr/dropbox/inkscape/mime-application-inkscape.png they use the current inkscape application icon on OS X, the new tangoified one proposed and the inkscape logo with a dropped shadow. Two Preview.app icons are taken as a reference to kern the text (*oh man, text kerning is so great in Inkscape!*). My personal preference would be on a tagoified version on the inkscape logo or on the current OS X icon with the pen removed (but I could not find the source svg).
If the tangoified icon in the patch tracker could use the Inkscape logo shape I would be an happy man ;-)
