Actually, the philosophy is the *key* to solving engineering problems.
And the philosophy on this particular point is the one key thing Fred Brooks realized he got wrong in the original Mythical Man-Month and had to come back years later to correct.
However... I think these mails prove my point about the discussion. These have gotten so long that by the end of your mail you've stated the opposite about vacuum defs than you asserted at the beginning.
