I will be satisfied by the functionality, until the resolution of my monitor increases beyond that. :) I had thought that document units made more sense because it doesn't require one to switch domains, first thinking about the size of the grid in document units and then thinking about screen pixels. But given that, it actually would require less thought if the interface was cluttered with an "Enforce snapping to grid" checkbox, which I believe had been suggested before.
Exactly. So what I would like to propose is:
Sensitivity: [========] 12 [x] Always snap
with slider range of e.g. 0..50; when the checkbox is on, the slider is disabled. Note that the checkbox is there only for grid snapping, as it makes no sense for guides and object snapping. Internally, the checkbox sets the sensitivity e.g. to 10000. The screen/document units switch is then removed.
Will this satisfy everyone?
This satisfies my functional needs. Is there a further refinment we can make to address the shift in thought that is required by screen pixels vs document units? I'm only asking because I don't know if the handy "Always snap" checkbox satifies everything. Will a user ever think, "I want all points within 1/4 inch to snap to the 1 inch grid but points in the mid 1/2 inch need not be snapped?" That is the functionality we are losing, right? I think just about everyone is ready for a hands on trial of the new model (with complaints to follow, of course). :)
