so i thought you would be the guy to request a look at: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/168960 (and if possible, https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1064717 as well.. )
i included there a link to how gimp seems to do it.. but i just realized its not quite all there, so i looked up a little more info and found these as well:

hope this is of some help. it would be a great feature to have for those of us who have fontforge open while working on a huge inkscape project that at times requires a refresh of the font list.
