Personally I would not object to removing the floating dialogs. But I know other people would object (those with multiple monitors, etc).
However, I'm not sure that I think it's necessary to keep the singleton behavior for them...
A freely floatable dialog not being a singleton? I don't see how it's possible without a terrible confusion.
I like the single desktop approach with multiple (tabbed) documents that you suggest. With gdl it wouldn't be a problem to allow documents to be arranged side by side in a split view, or as tabs in a notebook.
Ideally, yes. I would love to have that as the only mode of operation. But I don't know if we'll ever achieve that, given how entrenched is the current layout.
On the other hand I guess that some people just like their windows to be managed by their window manager :)
Not everyone has a window manager worth speaking about :)
