Actually, for a mail archive, or something that shows threads nicely (like Mozilla T-bird here), keeping the subject lines helps. Not all of the readers I have used know how to use the message ID's.
Now, if the mail agents could handle something like:
Subject: Blah blah Was: Re: original blah
that would be cool, but that is not universal either.
Maybe someone could set up HyperNews for this list. It somewhat blurs the email and newsgroup worlds together, provides the abilities of both.
